How to fix a corrupted MP4 file that won’t play

An MP4 that suddenly refuses to open is usually not destroyed. Most of the time the video and sound are still inside the file; what broke is the index that tells a player where they are.

Why MP4 files get corrupted

An MP4 file has two main parts: the media data (the actual frames and audio) and an index called the moov atom that lists where every frame is and when it plays. Cameras and phones usually write the index last, when you stop recording.

If the battery dies, the memory card is pulled, the app crashes or a copy is interrupted, the index can be missing, half-written or out of step with the data. Players then show errors like “file is corrupted”, “cannot play”, “moov atom not found”, or play only a black screen.

Quick checks before repairing

Check the file size. A 0 KB or a few-KB file has no video inside and cannot be repaired by anyone. A file of normal size almost always still contains the footage.

Try another player. VLC tolerates more damage than the default players and sometimes plays a file others reject.

Work on a copy. Keep the original untouched. Every repair on videorepair.pro runs on a copy for this reason.

Keep a healthy clip from the same camera. If the index is gone entirely, a short working video recorded with the same device and settings lets the repair restore the missing codec settings.

How to repair it online

1. Create a free account and open the dashboard.

2. Upload the damaged MP4. Choose Auto Rescue: it repairs the structure first and goes deeper only when frames or sound are missing.

3. If the recording never finished or the video is black, use Twin Match, Forensic or Fusion Max and add a healthy clip from the same camera.

4. Download the repaired copy. Files are deleted automatically after 48 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can every corrupted MP4 be fixed?

Most can, because the footage is usually still in the file. Footage that was overwritten or never written to the card cannot be recovered by any tool; a repair bridges those moments so the rest plays.

Will the repair change the quality?

When only the index is damaged, the original video is kept without re-encoding. Deeper rebuilds re-encode at high quality.

Is it free?

Your first repair is free (with a watermark). Paid plans remove the watermark and allow larger files.
