Video has sound but a black screen

When you hear the audio but see only black, the audio track is fine and the video stream cannot be decoded, usually because the codec settings in the file are damaged.

Why it happens

Every H.264 video stores a small block of codec settings (SPS/PPS) that the decoder needs before it can draw a single frame. If those bytes are corrupted, players fall back to black while the audio keeps going.

Less often, the video’s codec tag is wrong or unsupported. That case is fixed automatically by restoring the correct tag.

How to restore the picture

Add a healthy clip recorded with the same camera and settings and choose Twin Match, Forensic or Fusion Max. The repair replaces only the damaged settings with the sample’s, rebuilds the picture, and keeps your original sound.

Frequently asked questions

Will I keep my original audio?

Yes. The original audio track is re-attached to the repaired picture and checked for sync.

Why can’t it be fixed without a sample?

The settings that describe how the picture was compressed cannot be reconstructed from the frames alone; a same-camera sample provides them exactly.
